For a first-time owner, familiarity is a genuine product feature, and paying something extra for it is a defensible choice rather than a mistake.

$249, and It Renews Itself

The rate is $249 a year for registered agent service. Our check turned up no first-year discount and no promotional term, so it applies immediately and repeats automatically until you actively stop it. Among the Illinois services we track, that is the highest flat annual figure.

The part worth sitting with is the automatic renewal. It is a perfectly normal billing arrangement, and it is also the mechanism by which a decision made once becomes a decision you keep making without noticing. Leave it alone and year six costs $249 for the same duty a $99 provider performs, with nothing in the process prompting you to compare.

Put That Spread Next to What Illinois Charges

Illinois is not an expensive state to keep an LLC in. The annual report runs $75 on Form LLC-50.1. Swapping your registered agent runs $25. The penalty schedule lives at 805 ILCS 180/50-15, and it adds $100 once a report goes 60 days past its due date.

Your LLC cannot take the role itself, and the registered office you list must be that agent's actual place of business at a street address, never a box.
2. Complete Form LLC-1.36/1.37. The change of agent statement asks for your company name, your file number, the agent and office being replaced, and the agent and office replacing them. It is a short PDF from the state.
3. Send it with $25 to the Illinois Secretary of State, addressed to Business Services and its Limited Liability Division. That $25 is the whole state cost of the switch.
4. Watch for the record to update, generally inside several business days, and confirm the new agent appears on your entity listing.
5. Then cancel LegalZoom. Last, not first. Since the service renews automatically, put the cancellation on a calendar rather than trusting yourself to remember it.

Step five is last for a reason worth naming. Illinois assesses $100 against an LLC whose agent position sits empty with no replacement appointed within 60 days of the outgoing agent's notice. Switching cleanly never triggers that, because the form has no version where the incoming agent line is blank. The trouble only starts if you cancel your current provider and then take your time.
